When, in the 19th century, Barcelona demolished its walls, a grand promenade was designed to connect the upper part of the city, the mountainous area, with Ciutat Vella, the part by the sea.
Anyone walking along Las Ramblas is fascinated by the vitality and color along its just over one kilometer.
From Plaça de Catalunya to the Columbus Monument, on Las Ramblas you can drink water from the Canaletes fountain to return to the city, buy flowers at the numerous kiosks, enjoy the Mercat de La Boqueria, and visit the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Palau de la Virreina.
